Rent for what is left
The cheapest unit is one size smaller.
Most people rent for the pile as it stands. Sort the room first and the pile shrinks: a 10x15 becomes a 10x10, a 10x10 becomes a 5x10. Our decluttering guide walks the four-box method room by room, easiest room first.
Read how to decluttera month, the usual step between one unit size and the next
a year for every size you drop, before the climate-control premium
are what the sort takes: keep, donate, sell, trash, one room per session.
Four things to settle before you sign
The decisions that change the bill, in the order facilities tend to gloss over them.

Size
Size up when unsure
A 5x10 takes a studio's worth, a 10x10 one or two bedrooms, a 10x15 two or three, and a 10x20 most full houses. The step between sizes is usually $20 to 40 a month, and a unit you cannot walk into is a unit where things get damaged.
Climate
Climate control is the line item worth paying
Wood furniture, electronics, photos, leather and anything that swells or warps needs it. The premium runs about $30 to 50 a month, which is cheap insurance once the contents are worth more than $500.
Access
Check security and access
Gated entry, cameras, individual unit alarms and a lit lot are the baseline. If you will visit often, drive-up access or 24-hour entry matters more than a few dollars a month. Sparefoot filters on both.
Price
Ask about the first month
First month free, prepay discounts and military or student rates are common and rarely advertised on the sign. Confirm the terms at the facility before you sign; promos change with the season.
