How to Choose a Storage Bench
Depth decides the room, the rating decides who sits, and the hinge decides whether a child can use it. Prices and links for every bench are in the comparison table above.
Depth against the walkway
The shoe bench is 12 inches deep, the upholstered benches 15 to 16.5, the outdoor bench 23.6. Keep at least 32 inches of clear path past whatever you add, so a 12-inch bench fits a 44-inch hall and the 16.5-inch Amazon Basics needs 49. Bedrooms and living rooms rarely have that problem. Seat height
Chair height is 18 to 19 inches, and that is where the shoe bench and the cubby bench sit. The ottoman benches are 15 to 17, which is right at the foot of a bed and low for putting on shoes. The toy box is 15.75, sized for the child. If the bench is where adults will sit every day, buy the taller one.
The hinge, if a child will ever open it
A padded lid is heavy. The CPSC's guidance for toy chests is a lid support that holds the lid open in any position. Badger Basket publishes exactly that, a lid that stays up wherever it is left. Amazon Basics publishes a soft-close child-safety hinge that stops the slam, which is the lesser version. If a listing does not name the hinge, assume it is a plain one and keep that bench in a room children do not use.

Open shelves for shoes, so they dry. A closed box for bedding, throws and the things that should not be on show. The 32-gallon ottoman takes a set of bed linens or a season of sweaters. Cubes for bins, one per person or per category. The 70-gallon deck bench takes patio cushions and pool gear.
The load rating
Read it as the number of adults. SONGMICS publishes 660 pounds static on the 43-inch ottoman bench and 300 on the shoe bench, and Keter 551 on the Solana, which is two people and a bag. The ClosetMaid cubby bench is 200 and the Badger Basket 175, which is one adult or two children. Where a maker publishes no rating, the table says so, and the bench is a seat for one until proven otherwise.
Indoor fabric, outdoor resin
The resin bench is 23.6 inches deep and plain, so it stays on the deck. The fabric and laminate benches are the indoor pieces, and one season on a porch ruins them.
Tips Before You Order
Depth and seat height are both in the listing.
- Measure the hall with the door open. A bench that fits the wall can still block the swing.
- Check the rating is static load. It is a sitting number, not a standing-on-it number.
- Look for the hinge in the listing. Soft-close, no-slam or safety hinge means it is there. Silence means it is not.
- Match the cubes to the bins you own. The ClosetMaid cubes are 11 inches and take the Cubeicals fabric drawers. A 13-inch fabric cube will not go in.
- Buy the padlock with the deck bench. The latch is there. The lock is not.

Can two adults sit on a storage bench?+
Only where the maker rates it for two. The SONGMICS 43-inch ottoman is rated to 660 pounds static and the Keter Solana to 551, so yes on both. The Amazon Basics bench publishes no rating, and the ClosetMaid and Badger Basket are rated to 200 and 175, which is one grown-up. Static means sitting, not standing on the lid to reach a shelf.
Can I add a safety hinge to a bench that has a plain one?+
Usually. Lid supports sold for toy chests screw to the inside of the box and to the lid and hold it where it is left, as long as you buy the one rated for your lid's weight; they are sold by weight range. They fit any flip-top bench with a hinged lid and a wood or MDF frame. They do not fit a lift-off lid like the SONGMICS folding ottoman, which has nothing to hold.
How wide does a hall need to be for a bench?+
The bench depth plus 36 inches if the hall is the route through the house, and plus 32 at the very least. Then open the doors.
