Seven pantry cabinets for kitchens without a pantry, compared on width, depth, height, shelves, maker load ratings and whether anti-tip hardware is in the box.

If you only read one thing

Measure the wall and the walkway first: these cabinets are 15 to 16 inches deep, 64 to 72 inches tall, and most cost $80 to $250.

A tall two-door cabinet like the Sauder Select is the default for a free kitchen wall. For up to $300 a hutch adds an open counter, and a 12-inch slim cabinet fills the gap by the fridge. Anchor whichever one you buy.

Pantry Cabinets by Type

Six kinds, sorted by the space they fill. These are category picks from the makers' published specifications and the listings, not from loading each one with groceries.

Tall Pantry Cabinets

Planning budget$100-250

The plain tall box with shelves. Doors over four adjustable shelves and 71 inches of height against any free wall.

Best for

A kitchen or dining wall with 30 inches to spare and no pantry closet

Top pick

Sauder Select 2-door cabinet for full-depth shelves, or the four-door VASAGLE for door shelves and a drawer

What works well

  • Four adjustable shelves and a full-width top shelf on the Sauder
  • Tip restraint strap in the box
  • The VASAGLE adds door shelves for spices and a slide-out drawer

What to consider

  • Takes 16 inches of floor depth in a galley kitchen
  • Sauder's own page lists no shelf rating
  • VASAGLE's door shelves cut into the depth of its top-cabinet shelves
  • Flat-pack laminate

Kitchen Hutch Pantries

Planning budget$150-300

A pantry with an open counter between closed cabinets above and below, and two drawers under the counter.

Best for

A kitchen short on counter space as well as cupboard space

Top pick

HOSTACK 71-inch kitchen hutch

What works well

  • Open counter with a cable hole at the back
  • Two drawers on metal runners for foil, wrap and towels
  • Rated 450 pounds overall, 70 per shelf and 30 per drawer

What to consider

  • Anti-tip hardware not published, so buy a strap kit
  • Microwaves, most toasters and many coffee makers warn against running under a cabinet, so check the manual before using the counter for one
  • 31.5 inches wide, second only to the steel cabinet

Metal Pantry Cabinets

Planning budget$100-200

A steel cabinet with two doors and adjustable shelves.

Best for

Overflow in a dry garage or basement that stays cool year-round

Top pick

Steeloong 71-inch metal pantry cabinet

What works well

  • Steel, so the base won't swell the way laminate does
  • Four removable shelves that move up and down
  • Listing image rates each shelf to 180 pounds
  • Wall screws in the box

What to consider

  • Looks like a utility cabinet in a kitchen
  • 32 inches wide

Corner Pantry Cabinets

Planning budget$100-250

A cabinet with a 90-degree back that sits flush in a corner.

Best for

A dead corner a square cabinet would waste

Top pick

Vabches 64.8-inch corner cabinet

What works well

  • Four doors and five shelves
  • Anti-tip hardware included

What to consider

  • 64.8 inches tall, so less volume than the 71-inch cabinets
  • Farmhouse styling only
  • Length along each wall not published, so measure both walls out from the corner

Slim Pull-Out Pantries

Planning budget$70-250

A 12-inch tower whose shelves slide out on a frame.

Best for

A gap of at least 12 inches beside a fridge or washer

Top pick

JOYSOURCE 12-inch pull-out pantry cabinet

What works well

  • 11.8 inches wide, so it fits a 12-inch gap
  • The whole set of shelves slides out, so nothing hides at the back
  • Six shelves with rails to stop jars sliding off

What to consider

  • Rating and anti-tip hardware not published
  • A hinged door has to swing open before the shelves roll out
  • The slide-out frame puts it at the top of the slim range; a fixed-shelf slim cabinet costs less
  • Search results mix in open rolling carts, so check for the door

Barn-Door Pantries

Planning budget$100-230

A farmhouse cabinet with hinged barn-style doors over three compartments and two big drawers below.

Best for

A dining room or open kitchen where the cabinet is furniture

Top pick

DWVO barn-door pantry with two drawers

What works well

  • Two large drawers for linens and silverware
  • Listing says the base supports 300 pounds
  • Anti-tip kit included

What to consider

  • Three compartments in a 64.6-inch cabinet
  • MDF, so it stays in a dry room

How to Choose a Pantry Cabinet

Depth against the walkway

Every cabinet here is 15.2 to 16.1 inches deep. The National Kitchen & Bath Association's planning guidelines call for a 42-inch work aisle for one cook. Measure from the wall to the counter or appliance opposite, take off 16 inches, and check what is left with the dishwasher open. In a galley kitchen it is often too little for a cabinet on a free wall. The slim cabinet is just as deep, but it stands beside the fridge, in line with the counters, so it takes nothing from the aisle when closed.

Door swing

Each door on a 30-inch two-door cabinet swings out about half the cabinet's width. That is fine on an open wall and a problem beside a doorway or a fridge that opens toward it. The pull-out has its own full-height hinged door, about 12 inches wide, that swings open first. Then its frame rolls about 13 inches straight out. Stand it where that door can open all the way without meeting the fridge door.

Anchoring

A tall cabinet loaded at the top can tip toward whoever pulls a door. Sauder ships a tip restraint strap, VASAGLE, Vabches and DWVO ship anti-tip kits, and Steeloong ships wall screws. HOSTACK and the JOYSOURCE pull-out publish none, so add an anti-tip strap kit and put the screw into a stud.

Shelves and what goes on them

Adjustable shelves matter more than shelf count, because cereal boxes, bottles and cans want different gaps. The listing depth is the outside of the cabinet, and the shelf inside is shallower by the back panel and the door, so measure the shelf before you buy pantry containers for it. The pantry guide covers how to zone the shelves once it is up.

Tips Before You Order

  • Check the fridge's hinge side. Fridge manuals give a side clearance for the door to open fully, and a 12-inch tower that fills the gap on the hinge side can take it.
  • Plan the assembly space. These go together lying on the floor and stand up at the end, so clear a spot as long as the cabinet is tall.

Pantry Cabinet FAQ

Prices and links for every cabinet are in the comparison table above.

Can a pantry cabinet go in the garage or basement?+

The cabinet can, but the food depends on the room. USDA guidance says to keep canned goods out of a damp garage or basement and away from temperature extremes, so a garage that freezes or bakes is for paper towels and tools, not food. The steel Steeloong won't swell from a wet floor like laminate or MDF. Where the room runs damp, scratched steel rusts, so resin is the better box for non-food overflow.

Do I really need to anchor a freestanding pantry cabinet?+

Yes. A 71-inch cabinet loaded at the top can tip forward when a door is pulled hard or a child climbs a shelf, and the CPSC's Anchor It campaign asks for furniture with doors and shelves to be anchored to the wall. Five of the seven picks here ship with the hardware. For the other two, a furniture anti-tip strap kit runs about $8-20 and screws into a stud.

Can I anchor a pantry cabinet in a rental?+

Read the lease first, since some ban drilling. An anti-tip kit needs a screw or two into the wall, ideally into a stud, which leaves small holes that spackle fills at move-out. If the landlord says no screws, ask whether they will install the anchor themselves before you put a 71-inch cabinet full of cans against the wall unsecured.

Will a pantry cabinet hold a microwave?+

Usually not. The HOSTACK's listing calls its open compartment a microwave stand, but GE asks for 3 inches at the sides and top, 1 inch at the back and a 3-inch setback from the front edge, and advises against enclosed spaces like a cabinet. In a cabinet 15.75 inches deep overall, that rules out most microwaves. Most toaster and many drip coffee maker manuals warn against running them under a cabinet or below anything combustible, so read the manual first.

How much weight do the shelves hold?+

Three of the seven listings give a per-shelf figure: Steeloong 180 pounds, HOSTACK 70, and VASAGLE 60 per adjustable shelf and 10 per door shelf. The Steeloong and HOSTACK numbers sit in the listing images, not the text. DWVO's listing says its base supports 300 pounds. The rest publish nothing, so put cans and bulk bags on the bottom shelves, where a sagging shelf has the least to drop.

Pantry cabinet or open shelving?+

Doors if the cabinet stands in the room you eat in, since they keep dust off and hide the packaging. Open shelving if it lives in a pantry closet or garage, where you want to see everything at once.
